Clinically, the performance of 6-night and 30-night continuous wear hydrogels is similar, according to a study.

Judith Stern, BOptom, and colleagues studied 154 patients who commenced extended wear contact lenses for a 3-year prospective trial. How the lenses fared clinically was determined through the number of discontinuations and lens surface characteristics.

After 36 months, 88 patients remained in the study. The major cause for discontinuing lens wear was lens-induced papillary conjunctivitis. There was no clinically important difference in performance between wear schedules.

The study is published in the June issue of Optometry and Vision Science.
