Ocular Surgery News is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, a milestone that causes me to pause and reflect on where we are today and how we got here. It is a journey that, together with you, the reader, has taken us through some of the most significant advancements in ophthalmology.
During this journey, OSN has sought to keep its finger on the pulse of what readers want and need in an era of increasing competition for your time. We know you have no shortage of news options – both online and in print – and we strive to meet and surpass your highest standards by remaining on the cutting edge in both the content and format of the news.
We feel we have struck the right balance with the trinity of unbiased reporting, in-depth coverage and best-read news. But the journey continues.
Top 10 technologies
To commemorate its silver anniversary, OSN is launching with this issue a series of articles that will take a close look at the top 10 technologies of the past 25 years. These articles, which were developed with the input of our editorial board members, will go in-depth on the evolution of these advancements, including interviews with those instrumental in creating them.
In this issue we feature coverage on optical coherence tomography (OCT), including interviews with innovators such as Jay S. Duker, MD, Daniel S. Durrie, MD, James Fujimoto, MD, David Huang, MD, and Joel S. Schuman, MD.
Looking behind, looking ahead
Five years ago, upon celebrating our 20th anniversary, OSN’s tagline was “The voice of 65,000 ophthalmologists worldwide.” Since then, we hit the 70,000 mark, and this year we are proud to say that we reach 82,000 ophthalmologists worldwide – and we are still the best-read publication in ophthalmology.
Yet we are far from resting on our laurels – 2007 promises to be a year of exciting growth for OSN’s global franchise.
On a personal note, I am proud to celebrate 11 years as Chief Medical Editor since beginning my tenure in May 1996.
OSN is expanding its global reach this year with an expanded circulation in Europe, India and China. The expansion includes a China edition that will be translated entirely into Chinese and circulate to 7,500 ophthalmologists there.
The India edition will contain a special section with news of interest to Indian ophthalmologists, along with all of the coverage from OSN Europe/Asia-Pacific Edition, and will also circulate to 7,500 ophthalmologists.
What this means for all our readers is that OSN plans to become even more global, backed by resources in the far-flung corners of the earth to bring home the most timely and relevant clinical news – wherever it may occur.
OSN is unmatched when it comes to providing global coverage of meetings in all subspecialties. We have the largest number of dedicated reporters and editors who attend more than 40 ophthalmology meetings each year.
But the process of determining what to cover begins with our various Editorial Boards, which represent the ophthalmic leaders from every country we reach. We also have excellent Industry Advisory Council members, who offer us their experience and perspectives on this rapidly changing market.
Their cumulative expertise has afforded us a “behind-the-scenes” perspective, which, coupled with the knowledge and leadership of OSN and SLACK Incorporated, has given us a unique edge.
