"Lid Scrub Plus in conjunction with topical Betadine may provide a less expensive alternative to preop topical antibiotics as a value-added benefit in endophthalmitis compared to Betadine alone," Mitchell A. Jackson, MD, said at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting.
In the prospective study of 24 eyes of 12 patients requiring cataract surgery, the study eye received Lid Scrub Plus twice daily for 1 week preop and topical Betadine 5% intraoperatively. The contralateral eye served as control and received only topical Betadine 5%. Neither eye received preop topical antibiotics but received Zymar (gatifloxacin, Allergan) four times daily on the first postop day after the final swab was taken.
No eyes in either group developed endophthalmitis, Dr. Jackson said. The 54% reduction in growth of Staphylococcus epidermidis at 1 week was reduced to 0% in the Lid Scrub Plus eyes. There was a 38% reduction in any growth of S. epidermidis at 1 week in the topical Betadine-alone eyes, but there was persistence of growth (33%) by the first postop day.
