A 0.5% formulation of levofloxacin controlled bacterial conjunctivitis in pediatric patients, according to a subset analysis of two studies.

Steven Lichtenstein, MD, and colleagues in the Levofloxacin Bacterial Conjunctivitis Study Group analyzed a subset of 167 pediatric patients from two randomized, masked, controlled parallel group studies. Patients in the subset ranged in age from 1 to 16. Drops were instilled every 2 hours on days 1 and 2 and every 4 hours on days 3 through 5.

At the endpoint, 0.5% levofloxacin eradicated more microbes than either 0.3% ofloxacin or placebo. This was statistically significant in children aged 2 to 11, according to the study authors.

The study is published in the October issue of the Journal of AAPOS.
