PARIS — Significant differences were found between angle closure eyes and normal eyes in a Japanese population, most notably increased lens vault associated with angle closure eyes, a study found.
“Eyes with angle closure have shown greater [lens vault] compared with normal eyes. The [lens vault], which represents the anterior portion of the lens, is a novel parameter strongly associated with angle closure in Japanese after adjusting for age, gender, [anterior chamber width] and [lens thickness],” Mineo Ozaki, MD, and colleagues said in the study, presented in a poster at the World Glaucoma Congress here.
It examined 87 Japanese patients with angle closure. Of those, 51 had primary angle closure and 36 had primary angle-closure glaucoma. All angle closure cases had laser peripheral iridotomy. In addition, there were 68 normal Japanese patients with open angles and no evidence of glaucoma. All subjects underwent gonioscopy and anterior segment optical coherence tomography (Carl Zeiss Meditec). Customized software was used to measure lens vault and anterior chamber width.
The study found that after adjusting for multiple factors, lens vault was significantly associated with angle closure.
