WETZLAR, Germany — Leica Microsystems reported annual sales exceeding $1 billion for the full-year 2008, the company announced in a press release.

Last year, the Life Science, Biosystems, Industry and Surgical Divisions launched more than 50 new products, including super high-resolution STED technology, the Leica TCS LSI microscope system and FusionOptics, which reveals high-quality 3-D images simultaneously in high resolution and high depth of field.

"Over the last 2 years, we have seen a dramatic increase in the demand for our products throughout the world. In most of the markets in which we operate - including biomedical research, clinical applications, industry, microsurgery and histopathology we have achieved double-digit organic growth rates. Moreover, we have substantially expanded our product breadth through a number of strategic company acquisitions," David Martyr, PhD, president of Leica Microsystems, said in the release.

Leica Microsystems, which has 4,000 employees in 11 facilities, has acquired and integrated eight companies in Australia, Europe, the United States and Asia since 2005.
