Latanoprost shows lower incidence of hyperemia than bimatoprost, travoprost

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — In a study comparing latanoprost, bimatoprost and travoprost to determine the clinical outcomes and cases of hyperemia, patients on latanoprost had fewer cases, according to a poster presentation.

The study is one of the first to compare the three drugs simultaneously, said researchers Richard K. Parrish, MD, and Paul Palmberg, MD, of Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. Results were reported at a poster session here at annual meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.

Patients with intraocular pressure less than 23 mm Hg were selected. Four hundred and eleven patients were separated into 3 groups. Patients in each group received 0.005% of latanoprost, 0.03% of bimatoprost and 0.004% of travoprost, respectively.

Although the three drugs lowered IOP comparably, fewer patients taking latanoprost reported symptoms of hyperemia. A survey of ophthalmologists showed hyperemia led to an increase in telephone calls, office visits and patient medication non-compliance, according to Pharmacia, manufacturers of latanoprost.
