MINNEAPOLIS — LASIK was safe and effective in treating myopia and astigmatism in eyes that had previously undergone penetrating keratoplasty in a small study here.

Twenty eyes of 17 patients underwent LASIK following PK at the University of Minnesota over a 15-month period, mostly for keratoconus. Anisometropia or contact lens intolerance were the indications for the subsequent LASIK procedures.

Best corrected visual acuity remained within 1 line of preop visual acuity in 95% of the eyes. Mean sphere was reduced by 80% and mean cylinder was reduced by 70% from preop values at the last follow-up. Uncorrected visual acuity became 20/40 or better in 74% of the eyes after LASIK.

The study is published in the August issue of Cornea.
