LASIK platform shows safety, efficacy in correcting high myopia

ISTANBUL, Turkey — LASIK for high myopia using an excimer laser is safe, effective and predictable with limited induction of corneal higher-order aberrations, according to a speaker here.

"The [Schwind Amaris excimer laser] platform allows to achieve excellent visual outcomes, with minimal induction of corneal aberrations," Alfredo Vega-Estrada, MD, said at the winter meeting of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons here.

A total of 52 eyes of 32 patients with a high level of myopia or myopic astigmatism were treated. A LASIK flap was created using the IntraLase femtosecond laser (Abbott Medical Optics). The mean follow-up was 6 months.

Distance visual acuity remained the same or improved in more than 90% of eyes, and 83% of eyes were within 0.5 D of intended correction.

"Significant changes in spherical aberration and coma were reported, leading to visual quality improvement," Dr. Vega-Estrada said.

The refractive results obtained today when treating high levels of myopia are similar to those reported for low to moderate myopia in the last decade, he said.

"This is thanks to the advanced technology of the new-generation lasers, and to the use of femtosecond laser for flap creation. Possibly, these outcomes will become even better in the future," Dr. Vega-Estrada concluded.
