NEW DEHLI, India — Eyes that have previously undergone retinal detachment surgery may still be candidates for LASIK, according to a small case series.

Rasik Vajpayee and others here at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences studied 10 eyes of nine patients who underwent LASIK after previously undergoing retinal detachment surgery. Eight of the eyes underwent successful surgery.

Mean spherical equivalent was –5.43 D preoperatively. This was reduced to –0.06 D at 3 months and again –0.06 D at the 6 month follow-up. No patient experienced retinal complications after LASIK.

Two of the LASIK cases were aborted. The authors noted that scarred conjunctiva after retinal detachment surgery may prevent the creation of sufficient suction by the microkeratome.

The study is published in the May issue of British Journal of Ophthalmology.
