BARCELONA, Spain — Using hyperopic LASIK was safe and effective in adult patients with refractive accommodative esotropia, according to a study. Further studies in younger patients will help determine the appropriate age at which the surgery may be indicated, authors said.

Researchers here studied nine eyes of 18 patients with refractive accommodative esotropia who were undergoing hyperopic LASIK; mean follow-up was 20 months.

All patients achieved orthophoria or the preoperative microtropia without optical correction immediately after surgery, and it was maintained throughout the follow-up period. Of the patients, 56% were within 0.5 D of emmetropia, and 89% were within 1 D.

The study is published in the September issue of Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery.
