ADELAIDE, Australia — Ellex Medical Lasers announced that its noninvasive early-intervention laser improved visual function and reduced drusen in patients with early age-related macular degeneration, according to a company press release.

The prospective clinical trial included 24 high-risk early AMD patients undergoing retinal regeneration therapy with the Ellex 2RT. Interim 12-month results revealed the device improved visual function and reduced drusen in two-thirds of patients, the release said.

Improvements were seen not only in the treated eye, but often in the fellow eye, as well. Visual function improved most in the areas of the eye with the greatest dysfunction, the release said.

No evidence of laser damage to photoreceptor cells was detected.

The results were reported at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology meeting.
