Laser method for presbyopia correction achieves high patient satisfaction

PRAGUE — The Laser Blended Vision treatment from Carl Zeiss Meditec for presbyopia correction showed successful preliminary results in a mixed group of 70 emmetropic, myopic, hyperopic and astigmatic patients who underwent LASIK with the MEL 80 laser.
"The ablation profile of the laser increases spherical aberration in both eyes. At the same time, it induces a slight myopia between -1 D and -1.5 D in the nondominant eye," Cristian Falcon, MD, said at the winter meeting of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.
Results were satisfying, with 88% of the patients achieving J1 uncorrected for near and 97% being between J1 and J3. Binocular uncorrected distance vision was 20/20 or more in 94% of the cases.
After the first procedure, 88% of the patients were happy, and the remaining patients underwent an enhancement in one or both eyes. Six percent of the patients said that the results were not up to their expectations.
"Results were equally good for patients younger and older than 50 years, though patients over the age of 50 perceived more the difference of vision between eyes," Dr. Falcon said.
