ABU DHABI Schwind Amaris PresbyMax improves vision at all distances in both myopic and hyperopic eyes, according to one speaker here.
PresbyMax is based on bi-aspheric, multifocal ablation profiles, optimizing the central cornea for near vision and the mid-peripheral cornea for far vision, Haifa Mahmood, MD, said at the World Ophthalmology Congress. Ablation is performed in a single step.
Dr. Mahmood treated 155 eyes, of which 86 were hyperopic, 64 were myopic and five were emmetropic. The group included six pseudophakic eyes and six RK eyes.
The patients' ages ranged from 41 to 59 years, and follow-up lasted 2 years.
At 6 months, the myopic patients achieved better vision than expected, 20/20 at both distance and near.
"At 1 month, 56% were already 20/20 at distance and 94% were 20/20 at near," Dr. Mahmood said.
Distance vision improved gradually for hyperopic patients. Only 26% achieved 20/20 at 1 month, 79% at 3 months and 89% at 6 months.
"As anticipated, near vision was good earlier. By 6 months, 94% were 20/20, and I didn't see anybody less than 20/40," Dr. Mahmood said.
Only three of five emmetropic patients achieved 20/20, and two achieved 20/40. Both the pseudophakic and RK patients achieved 20/20 at both distance and near.
