Lamellar keratoplasty aids outcome of Mooren’s corneal ulcer

GUANGZHOU, China — Corneal ulcer microsurgery can greatly improve the outcome of the disease and postoperative vision. It may also reduce surgical complications and postoperative ulcer recurrence, according to a study from the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center.

Jiaqi Chen, MD, and colleagues divided patients into two groups – one that received microsurgery with lamellar keratoplasty for Mooren’s corneal ulcer and one that received non-microsurgery with lamellar keratoplasty for the same condition.

Postoperative astigmatism, ulcer recurrence and surgical complications of the microsurgery-treated group were less than those of the non-microsurgery treated group.

The study is published in Microsurgery.
