Knowledge of the likely local causes of infection can be valuable in the management of suppurative keratitis when microscopy is not available, a large multinational study suggests.

A.K. Leck and colleagues studied 1,090 patients with suspected microbial keratitis in Ghana and southern India. The main causative microorganisms in both regions were filamentous fungi. In cases of bacterial keratitis, Pseudomonas species were most frequently isolated Ghana, and streptococci were the most common in India.

The study and literature review is published in the Journal of Community Eye Health.
