Ketorolac effective for controlling postop pain after vitreoretinal surgery
DURHAM, N.C. Ketorolac tromethamine effectively treats postoperative pain following vitreoretinal surgery, according to a study. Compliance with postop procedures in this group of patients may affect surgical outcomes, so pain management is imperative, authors note.
Sharon Fekrat, MD, and colleagues here with Duke University Eye Center and at Baltimores Wilmer Eye Center randomized 114 vitreoretinal surgery patients to receive either a single intravenous dose of ketorolac tromethamine or placebo. Postoperative follow-up was at 2 and 5 hours and measured eye pain, nausea and sedation levels.
Patients who received ketorolac were significantly less likely to have postop eye pain. Also, significantly fewer patients in this group required postop analgesia as opposed to patients in the placebo group. While not statistically different, fewer patients in the ketorolac group experienced nausea and sedation.
