CHARENTON-LE-PONT, France — Essilor has signed an agreement to purchase Johnson & Johnson Vision Care’s ophthalmic lens business, Essilor said in a press release.

The J&J’s spectacle lens group developed the Definity brand of progressive lenses, which includes technology that divides progressive add power between the front and back surfaces, according to the press release. Essilor will continue to manufacture the lenses and distribute them in the United States.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed; the transaction is subject to regulatory approval in the United States and is expected to close in the third quarter of 2005.
