Iris-fixed IOL in amblyopic children has positive early visual results

SAN FRANCISCO — Preliminary data shows iris-fixed anterior chamber IOLs improve vision in amblyopic children who are contact lens and spectacle intolerant or in aphakic children who lack zonular support for a posterior chamber IOL.

Anthony Panarelli, MD, and colleagues collected prospective outcome data on 10 hyperopic eyes of seven children who were given the Artisan iris-fixed IOL (Ophtec), according to a poster presentation here at the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus meeting.

"Aphakic spherical correction averaged 12.35 D and phakic correction +10.5 D," Dr. Panarelli reported. "Two of the five aphakic eyes and four of five phakic eyes were corrected to within 1 D of emmetropia; the remaining were corrected to within 2 D."

There were no reported complications in the phakic group, but the researchers are monitoring endothelial cell counts. Mean follow-up was 8.1 months.

"The preliminary results demonstrate that iris-enclaved hyperopic IOLs are useful for improving uncorrected vision in amblyopic children who cannot tolerate glasses or contact lenses," he said.
