In a Wednesday session on phaco technology held at the Alcon-sponsored event, "Ophthalmology Management Trends," preceding the 25th APAO Congress, Richard Mackool, MD, Director of the Mackool Eye Institute, discussed how the Alcon OZil IP software system on the Infiniti phaco platform can facilitate complex surgical cases.
Using a video presentation, Mackool demonstrated the advantages of using the IP system on complex cataract cases. In the video, Mackool encounters an unknown preexisting zonular defect. Narrating the video, Mackool gave attendees a step-by-step approach to handling the situation.
Mackool injected Viscoat into the capsular corner to close the opening in the zonular space. After staining the capsule was complete, he injected more viscoelastic to increase visibility of the capsulorrhexis. He then proceded to stabilize the capsule using the Mackool cataract support system.
"You must insert one for every 45 degrees where there is no zonule support," Mackool said. "If the zonule is weak, but present, you only need them every 90 degrees."
After making the slight adjustments to the surgery, Mackool completed the case as he would if it were a simple surgical case.
"This procedure, which could have been tremendously difficult, was made easier because with OZIL IP on the INFINITI system nuclear material stays on the tip," Mackool said. "The fluidics let me use 40 ccs/minute because my nuclear segment is staying on the tip."
