DUBLIN, Calif. — The IOLMaster, from Carl Zeiss Meditec, was the device used by the greatest number of U.S. cataract surgeons for measuring axial length last year, according to a press release from Zeiss.

David Leaming, MD, has conducted an annual survey of the practice styles and preferences of U.S. members of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery for the past 20 years. According to a press release from Carl Zeiss Meditec, 47% of those responding to Dr. Leaming's 2005 survey said they used the IOLMaster for measuring axial length for cataract/IOL surgery, 32% reported using applanation ultrasound techniques and 20% said they used immersion ultrasound.

Among those who perform more than 50 cataract surgeries per month, about two-thirds reported using the IOLMaster, according to a quote attributed to Dr. Leaming in the press release.
