SAN DIEGO — Femtosecond laser is a promising technology for presbyopia, according to a study presented here.

Tarek A. Wahab, MD, said at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting that the IntraCor intrastromal femtosecond laser correction procedure (Technolas Perfect Vision) does not require incisions into the epithelium, Bowman's membrane or Descemet's membrane, decreasing the risk of infection.

"IntraCor is an effective and safe flapless procedure to correct presbyopia," Dr. Wahab said.

It is also a rapid procedure, he said.

The prospective, nonrandomized, noncomparative study assessed 10 patients treated with IntraCor. Best corrected distance visual acuity increased, but not significantly, while distance corrected mean visual acuity increased from 0.5 to 0.9 at 12 months.

IntraCor may be used to manage myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism in the future, Dr. Wahab said.
