Intraoperative aberrometer launched at ASCRS meeting

SAN FRANCISCO — WaveTec Vision Systems announced the launch of its ORange Intraoperative Aberrometer, the first intraoperative wavefront aberrometer, at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery Meeting here.

The new system could help ophthalmic business practice by allowing for real-time measurements of sphere, cylinder and axis in approximately 2 to 5 seconds. Using the device, which attaches to the surgical microscope, physicians can track changes during cataract surgery, placement of limbal relaxing incisions (LRIs) or insertion of toric lenses, clinicians said at a company-sponsored media briefing.

The device could enable physicians to charge more frequently for LRIs and to improve overall visual outcomes, thus enhancing the business of their practices, clinicians said.

"For a refractive surgery to be successful, you need to have great outcomes on the first day postoperatively," Eric Donnenfeld, MD, said at the briefing. "Any suboptimal results the first day postop, no matter how much you explained preoperatively, it's not going to have that 'wow effect,' where [patients] call all their friends and tell everybody about how good the results were."
