Intraoperative aberrometer improves LRI outcomes for astigmatism

BARCELONA — An intraoperative wavefront aberrometer improved outcomes for reducing astigmatism with limbal relaxing incisions, according to one speaker here.

Edward J. Holland, MD, presented results from an eight-site, prospective study employing the WaveTec ORange intraoperative wavefront aberrometer used intraoperatively in cataract surgery with limbal relaxing incisions (LRIs) at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting.

Taking wavefront aberrometry readings during surgery "can reduce 'refractive surprises' following LRIs," Dr. Holland said.

The wavefront aberrometer is able to measure the effectiveness of LRIs by measuring sphere and cylinder to help guide the surgeon, Dr. Holland said.

"In cases where significant intraoperative residual astigmatism remained, the LRI was lengthened or deepened," he said.

At 1-month postop, the study showed a 67% improvement in manifest refraction in the group in which the ORange was used intraoperatively compared with the group without, he said. Eight percent of eyes in the non-ORange group showed residual astigmatism greater than 1.5 D compared with no eyes in the ORange group.
