NEW ORLEANS Intraoperative 5-fluorouracil significantly improves the long-term survival of glaucoma surgery, according to one study.
Peng T. Khaw, MD, PhD, discussed results of the More Flow Study, conducted at Moorfields Eye Hospital in England, here at the American Academy of Ophthalmology meeting. The study was a randomized, prospective trial of intraoperative 5-FU vs. placebo. The study set out to determine if a single 5-minute application of 5-FU extended the survival of glaucoma filtration surgery and reduced any field loss and optic disc progression.
The study found that just one application improved the survival of glaucoma surgery for up to 80 months.
There were no differences in blebitis, endophthalmitis, visual loss, field or disc progression in the 5-FU group, as compared with those patients who received placebo, Dr. Khaw said.
