CHICAGO The Akreos MI60 single-piece hydrophilic acrylic IOL showed good results for implantation when coupled with 1.8-mm microincision cataract surgery, early results of a multicenter European study have found.
Thomas Kohnen, MD, presented 6-month interim clinical data on implantation of Bausch & Lomb's Akreos MI60 single-piece IOL at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting here.
"The MI60 IOL is safe and effective when implanted through a 1.8-mm incision," he said. "The implanted intraocular lenses showed excellent centration and a low degree of optic tilt."
The 2-year prospective study is being conducted in centers in Germany, Italy, Sweden, France and Spain. It is examining the aberration-free aspheric optic posterior chamber lens, which has a four-point fixation design and a 360° posterior barrier optic edge, Dr. Kohnen said.
The study examined results of subgroups of 125 patients. The age of study participants ranged from 47 to 84 years. Cataracts that were graded slight to moderate occurred in 67.2% of patients, and those rated very dense occurred in 32.8%, Dr. Kohnen said.
Preoperative spherical equivalent was 0.53 ± 2.93 D; 4 to 6 months postoperatively, the spherical equivalent of 90 patients was 0.00 ± 0.92 D, he said.
The logMAR uncorrected visual acuity at 6 months for 86 patients was 0.24 ± 0.25, and the logMAR best corrected visual acuity for 85 patients was 0.02 ± 0.15, he said.
Centration was measured using a Nidek EAS-1000 Scheimpflug system. Dr. Kohnen and colleagues at the German study site found that at 7 to 14 days in 17 patients, the mean centration was 0.29 mm, while at 30 to 60 days in 14 patients, it was 0.25 mm.
