Insulin lispro shows no adverse impact on DR during pregnancy
HELSINKI, Finland Insulin lispro helps to improve glycemic control in women during pregnancy with no adverse impact on progression of diabetic retinopathy, according to a study.
Sirpa Loukovaara, MD, and others here with Helsinki University Central Hospital studied 69 pregnant women who had type 1 diabetes. Of those, 36 were treated with insulin lispro and 33 were treated with regular human insulin. Retinopathy was estimated by color fundus every trimester and in the postpartum period.
HbA1c values were similar at baseline between the groups, but were lower in the insulin lispro group throughout the remainder of the pregnancy. Hypoglycemic episodes did not differ between the treatment groups.
The study is published in the April issue of Diabetes Care.
