SAN FRANCISCO — The field of ophthalmology faces significant challenges in the year ahead, and greater member participation in the activities of the American Society of Cataract Surgery will be crucial to addressing them, according to Alan S. Crandall, MD.

With the global economy in disarray, pending regulations and reforms to healthcare, unprecedented expansion of healthcare against a backdrop of budget shortfalls, and the looming medical needs of the aging Baby Boomer generation, there is no doubt that ophthalmologists need to work together to solve the issues.

"Addressing these challenges will take our diligence, our advocacy and our participation," Dr. Crandall said.

Using participation as a theme throughout his welcome address to his constituents, Dr. Crandall said that ASCRS in general, and members in particular, will need to continue relationships with the international community, the advocacy arm of the society, policy makers and industry to ensure the continued viability of ophthalmic practice.

Dr. Crandall also used his new platform to encourage members to participate in charitable missions. He hopes to expand ASCRS activity in addressing cataract blindness in the developing world and asked his peers to join him in making a difference.

"We are out there, and you can be too," Dr. Crandall said. "I encourage you to participate."
