AMSTERDAM, Netherlands — There may be an association between retinoblastoma and in vitro fertilization, a study suggests.

Every year about 3,000 women in the Netherlands undergo in vitro fertilization (IVF). Between November 2000 and February 2002, Annette Moll and colleagues at Vrije Universiteit Medical Centre identified retinoblastoma in five patients born after IVF.

Based on these cases, the authors calculated relative risks for retinoblastoma, and they found the risk is significantly higher for children born after IVF. The study authors recommend a population-based study to confirm their findings.

The study is published in the January issue of The Lancet.
