LAS VEGAS — Digital imaging technologies can help confirm the presence of subtle ocular defects and thus eliminate the need for repeated confirmatory testing in glaucoma, according to Joel R. Schuman, MD.

Dr. Schuman provided a review of glaucoma diagnostic technologies including the Heidelberg Retinal Tomograph, optical coherence tomography from Carl Zeiss Meditec and the GDx from Laser Diagnostic Technology here at the Ocular Surgery News Symposium, Glaucoma: Improving Your Odds.

Dr. Schuman said that one goal of imaging is to detect glaucomatous loss early to prevent visual loss. He said imaging may also be useful for outcomes evaluation in the study of medical and surgical treatments.
