ICL useful in pediatric high myopia, study finds

TOULOUSE, France — The ICL, STAAR Surgical’s phakic posterior chamber lens, was effective in the treatment of high myopia in pediatric patients with amblyopia in a study here.

Researchers at the University of Toulouse implanted the ICL in 12 eyes of 11 children (aged 3 to 16) who had high myopic amblyopia. Conventional therapy with spectacles or contact lenses had been unsuccessful. Preoperative spherical equivalent refraction ranged from -8 D to -18 D. Mean follow-up was 20.5 months.

The authors noted good tolerance of the ICL without inflammatory reaction or secondary capsular opacity. Stable intraocular pressure and good ICL position were observed in all eyes. Recovery of binocular vision occurred in six patients and orthotropic position in seven patients.

The study is published in the September/October issue of Journal of Refractive Surgery.
