ICG staining aids in identifying undetected bleb leakage, study shows

Indocyanine green staining can help identify bleb leakage during trabeculectomy that was not detected using an operating microscope, a study shows.

Teruhiko Okazaki, MD, and colleagues evaluated use of the dye in 48 eyes of 44 consecutive trabeculectomy patients, which surgeons applied widely over the filtering bleb and conjunctival wound before completing surgery.

Without staining, surgeons observed no bleb leakage. However, ICG staining "clearly visualized" aqueous leakage in five eyes (10.4%), the authors said. Surgeons repaired the blebs using sutures, and no complications were reported, they noted. The study is published in the March issue of the Journal of Glaucoma.
