CHICAGO — Hyperopic LASIK was shown safe, effective and predictable through 5 years of follow-up, one surgeon said here.

During the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting, Stephan Kaminski, MD, presented data on 29 eyes of 17 patients followed through 5 years after undergoing hyperopic LASIK with the Allegretto WaveLight laser.

Hyperopic LASIK for "up to 6 D appears to be safe and effective and is predictable, but we do need longer follow-up to determine regression," Dr. Kaminski said.

At 1 month postop, 98% of eyes were within 1 D and that decreased, at 5 years, to 94%. Preoperative BCVA was 20/20 in 82% of all eyes and, 5 years later, UCVA is 20/20 in 58% of eyes, and 98% were 20/40 or better, he said.

Although there was a slight hyperopic shift after 5 years, Dr. Kaminski said 89% of all eyes were ± 0.5 D of emmetropia. The mean preop spherical equivalent was 2.6 D and the mean spherical equivalent at 5 years was 0.35 D, he said.

"At last visit best corrected visual acuity of all eyes was within ± 2 Snellen lines of best corrected visual acuity preoperative and no eye lost more than 2 lines," Dr. Kaminski said.
