NEWARK, N.J. — With the launch of the Ophthalmic Hyperguide, ophthalmologists now have a comprehensive online resource with which to advance their knowledge of ophthalmology.

The Ophthalmic Hyperguide is an interactive, educational Web site for eye care professionals and contains materials authored and edited entirely by experts in ophthalmology. The Hyperguide contains up-to-date information for ophthalmologists.

“We have a lot of information crossing a lot of subspecialties in ophthalmology,” said Rudolph Wagner, MD, a physician with the Children’s Eye Care Center of New Jersey and Pediatric Ophthalmology module editor for the Hyperguide. “The people who are being chosen to give the lectures or presentations are experts, so you are getting information from people who are thought-leaders on the particular subject you are discussing.”

Dr. Wagner said that the site contains basic information that is helpful for residents or practicing ophthalmologists, “but at the same time, it incorporates this basic information with what is new or more relevant to their practices. It’s worthwhile to check it periodically,” Dr. Wagner added.

The site

The Hyperguide is supported by an educational grant from Allergan. It was demonstrated at the 2000 American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) meeting in Dallas and at Hawaii 2001, but the site officially launched in April 2001. The site also will be demonstrated in the SLACK Inc. booth (#308) at the American Academy of Ophthalmology meeting.

The emphasis of the Hyperguide is on ease of obtaining up-to-date information. The Hyperguide is made up of 10 modules, each containing tutorials, sample test questions and online lectures. The tutorials provide a comprehensive review of many important topics in ophthalmology and are illustrated with slides and tables. Users have the opportunity to be quizzed with hundreds of sample test questions. Additionally, the online lectures contain live media presentations captured from national symposia.

Other Hyperguide editors include Carmen A, Puliafito, MD, MBA, Chief Medical Editor; David F. Chang, MD, Cataract and IOLs module; Barry D. Milder, MD, Clinical Optics module; Louis B. Cantor, MD, Glaucoma module; Barrett Katz, MD, MBA, Neuro-Ophthalmology module; Mark R. Levine, MD, Oculoplastics module; Sander Dubovy, MD, Ophthalmic Pathology module; Peter J. McDonnell, MD, Refractive Surgery module; and Adam Martidis, MD, Retina module.

Get credit

In addition to lectures and information, the Hyperguide also offers ophthalmologists another incentive to log on: users can earn continuing medical education credits simply by using the site. Credits are offered through SLACK Incorporated, which is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME).

Users of the Ophthalmic Hyperguide will earn 1 hour of credit for each hour they spend reading tutorials, viewing online lectures and answering test questions. To receive the credit, users can complete and submit an electronic registration and evaluation form.
