Hyaluronidase offers fast onset, no additional benefit in sub-Tenon's anesthesia

Adding hyaluronidase in sub-Tenon’s anesthesia significantly improved the rapidity of the onset of akinesia, but the benefit disappeared over time, according to a study.

Amar Alwitry, MRCS, MRCSEd, MRCOphth, and colleagues randomized 100 patients undergoing phacoemulsification to one of two groups for sub-Tenon's anesthesia: the first group received 5 mL lignocaine 2% with sodium hyaluronidase and the second group received 5 mL lignocaine 2% alone.

There was no significant difference in akinesia between the two groups 30 seconds after injection. At 1 and 3 minutes, the first group achieved significantly better akinesia than the second group. At 5 and 10 minutes, there was no significant difference between the two groups.

The study is published in the August issue of Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery.
