Cross-linked hyaluronic acid can be used to temporarily treat anophthalmic patients who develop a deep upper lid sulcus, a small pilot study suggests.

Hans-Werner Meyer-Rüsenberg, MD, evaluated use of such acid injections in five patients with deep, persistent upper lid sulcus defects and monitored acid resorption by photography every 4 weeks, according to the study.

The time required for acid resorption varied from 4.5 to 11 months. Four of the five patients did well over the course of follow-up, although two patients showed better prosthesis moistening. The fifth patient lost the acid completely within 2 days and showed signs of inflammation, Dr. Meyer-Rüsenberg reported.

The study is published in the April issue of Der Ophthalmologe.
