FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A group of researchers from University Hospital, K.U. Leuven, Belgium, Middelheim Hospital, Antwerp, Belgium, and the European Glaucoma Prevention Study group presented a poster, “Long-term intra-individual variability for each parameter of the HRT in patients with stable OHT,” at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) meeting here on Sunday, April 29, 2001.
In order to determine the long-term intra-individual variability for each parameter of the Heidelberg Retina Tomograph (HRT), S. Pourjavan, V. Boeyden, M. Goethals and T. Zeyen followed prospectively a group of 44 patients (64 eyes) with stable ocular hypertension (OHT). Every patient was examined every 6 months with the HRT 1. Three images were taken per visit and averaged. The contour line was the circle that best fit the optic disc margin.
The mean follow-up was 36 months (18-48 months). Each patient had a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 8 HRTs, and the mean IOP was 20 + or – 2.5 mmHg.
The group concluded that long-term intra-individual variability of HRT parameters is important in patients with stable OHT. This should be taken into account when calculating change. Also, rim area was the least variable parameter.
