Hormone replacement with tibolone seems to improve tear function

In postmenopausal women, hormone replacement therapy with tibolone seems to improve tear function tests, according to a study.

Pelin Taner and colleagues in Ankara, Turkey, investigated the effect of two hormone replacement therapy (HRT) regimens on the ocular surface and tear function of postmenopausal women. They enrolled 70 women in their study, of whom 16 were not on HRT, 29 were on HRT with tibolone and 25 received estradiol plus medroxyprogesterone acetate treatment.

Patients in the tibolone group showed improved Schirmer testing and tear film breakup time results (P < .001). No significant changes occurred in either of the other groups. Conjunctival cytology scores did not differ at the time of enrollment and at 6 months follow-up in any group.

The study is published in Ophthalmologica.
