High prevalence of narrow anterior chamber angles found among Filipino-Americans
J Glaucoma. 2011;20(3):139-142.
Filipino-Americans have a high prevalence of gonioscopically narrow anterior chamber angles, a study found.
In a retrospective chart review, 222 eyes of 112 self-identified Filipino-American patients from one clinic were analyzed. Data from 50 eyes of 25 white patients from the same clinic were included for comparison.
Narrow anterior chamber angles were observed in at least one eye of 24% of Filipino-American patients (Shaffer grade = 2). All eyes of white patients included in the study had an open anterior chamber angle.
Increases in hyperopic refraction (P = .007) and larger cup-to-disk ratio (P = .038) caused a significant decrease in angle grade in Filipino-American patients, according to the study. In addition, angle grades in Filipino-American women were significantly decreased compared with Filipino-American men (P = 0.028) but did not vary by IOP or age (both P = .059).
Study limitations include the small population size and possible bias from sampling during the first half of the year. The authors suggested a cross-sectional, population-based study as the next phase of research.
