HEIDELBERG, Germany — Heidelberg Engineering announced in a press release that it is introducing a new perimeter technology at the World Glaucoma Congress in Singapore. The device, called the Heidelberg Edge Perimeter, uses a new stimulus called the Flicker Defined Form, which targets magnocellular (M) cells and is highly sensitive to functional loss due to early glaucoma, according to the release.

The stimulus "creates an illusory edge where the patient perceives a circular stimulus" using flickering black and white patterns. It is more comfortable for patients than conventional methods, the release said.

"The Heidelberg Edge Perimeter is specifically designed to investigate the earliest possible functional damage in patients with glaucoma, whilst also improving on traditional test-retest characteristics in order to better follow disease progression," John Flanagan, OD, PhD, developer of the technology, said in the release.

The perimeter will work in combination with the Heidelberg Retina Tomograph, the release said.
