Heidelberg releases new software for Spectralis

HEIDELBERG, Germany — Heidelberg Engineering has released new software for its Spectralis product line, according to a press release from the company.

The free upgrade to version 5.4 incorporates RegionFinder software into more than 2,500 installed confocal laser scanning ophthalmoscopes with the BluePeak Blue Laser Autofluorescence module.

"The RegionFinder has been validated at our reading center to measure the primary endpoint in clinical trials on potential treatments of dry AMD," Glenn Jaffe, MD, OSN Retina/Vitreous Board Member and professor of ophthalmology and director of the Duke Reading Center, said in the release.

RegionFinder enables quantification and tracking of dark areas on BluePeak images that are typically used for following progression of geographic atrophy. These images aid assessment of retinal health and identification of dry and wet age-related macular degeneration.

"Heidelberg Engineering recognized early on the clinical importance of blue laser autofluorescence in the management of AMD and supported the collaborative development of the RegionFinder with our department and reading center," Frank Holz, MD, professor of ophthalmology and chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Bonn, said in the release.
