VISTA, Calif. — Heidelberg Engineering GmbH has received clearance from the Food and Drug Administration for its combined spectral domain ocular coherence tomographer and laser angiographer, the company announced.

The Spectralis HRA+OCT scans the retina 40,000 times per second, 100 times faster than existing OCT technologies, according to a press release from Heidelberg. It can also combine cross-sectional images of the retina with any of four other imaging modalities, including autofluorescence, infrared, fluorescein angiography and indocyanine green angiography, the press release said.

Because the device captures OCT and HRA images simultaneously, clinicians can correlate external and internal retinal structures, according to the release.

The company expects to begin shipping the product in mid-2007.
