HEDIS to include glaucoma screening in 2005
WASHINGTON The National Committee for Quality Assurance has approved a set of measures that will include glaucoma screening for older adults for the first time, according to a press release from the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
The 2005 Health Plan Employer Data and Information Set (HEDIS) outlines voluntary quality measures for private health plans to meet, the AAO release said. The glaucoma screening measure has been in the works since 2001, according to AAO.
The complete 2005 HEDIS set is a substantially expanded version of the tool currently used throughout the health care industry to measure performance, according to the AAO release. The quality rating will be based on the percentage of plan users who participate for more than 2 years, who are older than 65 and have either a midlevel eye exam, a glaucoma screening using the G code or a visual field code.
