Healon GV increased postop central corneal thickness more than other regimens
UMEA, Sweden — Patients receiving Healon GV during phacoemulsification had higher transient postoperative increase in central corneal thickness than patients receiving either Viscoat or Provisc, results of a study found.
Anders Behndig, MD, PhD, and Björn Lundberg, MD, studied 62 patients with otherwise healthy eyes who had routine phaco and IOL implantation. Patients were divided into three groups. One was given Healon GV (Pharmacia) at phaco and IOL implantation; one was given Viscoat (Alcon) at phaco and Healon GV at IOL implantation; and the third group was given Viscoat at phaco and Provisc (Alcon) at lens implantation. Central corneal thickness was measured with ultrasonic pachymetery before surgery and 5 and 24 hours, 1 week and 1 month postoperatively.
The mean increase in corneal thickness was significantly greater in the first group than in the other two groups at 5 and 24 hours and 1 week postop.
The study is published in the September issue of the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery.
