WAILEA, Hawaii — While much of the U.S. suffered from unusually low temperatures, a sunny sky and warm breezes greeted attendees of Hawaiian Eye 2009.

Sunday's program included a dose of practice management advice from Kevin J. Corcoran, COE, CPC, FNAO, Alan E. Reider, JD, MPH, and moderator Bruce S. Maller.

And despite the sage advice of these consultants who discussed the impact of the global economic crisis, heavier oversight by the U.S. government on physician-industry relationships, compliance, and Medicare coding and reimbursement changes and challenges in 2009, Mr. Maller reminded attendees to not lose perspective.

"We do have it really good. We work in an awesome profession where we do some fantastic things for people," he said. "Your job and my job are pretty cool. It is a privilege."

"This whole debacle has been a healthy reminder to don't overact," Mr. Maller said. "Every time there is a challenge, we are smart people, we figure it out. We find opportunity."

The Practice Management section, "The Business of Ophthalmology," was followed by the Lifestyles section, which carried the theme "Life Outside of Ophthalmology," and by special guest speaker and New York Times bestselling author James Bradley, who discussed his book Flags of Our Fathers.
