Good results seen with topography-guided PRK, corneal cross-linking

BARCELONA — Combined topography-guided PRK and corneal cross-linking is safe and effective for myopic astigmatism in eyes with forme fruste keratoconus, according to a presentation at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting here.

"There was a transient decrease in pachymetry and a transient increase in posterior flat," Mirko R. Jankov, MD, PhD, said.

Five eyes of three patients with forme fruste keratoconus were treated with combined topography-guided PRK and corneal cross-linking. At 6-months follow-up, no corneas showed any progress in posterior float elevation. All corneas were treated with T-CAT software and WaveLight Allegretto excimer laser (Alcon) and subsequent cross-linking.

There was a decrease in mean corneal thickness to 367 ± 20 µm, reaching its previous average thickness at 6 months. All eyes gained the same preoperative best corrected visual acuity at 3 months, increasing to 0.73 ± 0.31 from 0.62 ± 0.35. Mean spherical refraction was 0.41 ± 0.62 D and mean cylinder refraction was –0.62 ± 0.65 D.
