Glaucoma study shows 22% increase at 5-year follow-up
HYBERABAD, India – In the general population, almost a quarter of the people suspected of having primary angle-closure glaucoma will develop the disease, researchers here said.
Ravi Thomas, MD, reported initial results of an ongoing study comparing disease progression in those considered at risk for primary angle-closure glaucoma with those who already had the disease and their progression rates. A population-based survey conducted in 1995 was used to pull participants for the 2000 follow-up. Progression to primary angle-closure glaucoma was based on raised IOP or synechiae.
Of the 82 suspected glaucoma participants, 50 were examined. They were compared with 110 control subjects from the same survey base. Of the examined suspected patients, 22% developed primary angle-closure glaucoma and had been considered at risk for developing the disease bilaterally. Patients who developed the disease did not develop functional damage at the follow-up mark.
The study is published in the April issue of British Journal of Ophthalmology.
