Glaucoma shunt shows IOP reduction at minimum 1 year follow-up
Can J Ophthalmol. 2009;44(4):457-462.
Implanting the Ex-PRESS mini glaucoma shunt under the scleral flap in primary open-angle glaucoma patients resulted in a success rate of more than 70% at 18 months follow-up, a study found.
The prospective, noncomparative, nonrandomized study looked at 37 primary open-angle glaucoma eyes of 35 patients. All patients had the Ex-PRESS X200 (Optonol) shunt implanted under the scleral flap. Minimum follow-up was 1 year.
Preoperative IOP was 27.6 mm Hg; at final follow-up, it was 12.4 mm Hg, a reduction of 55.1%. The success rate of IOP at 18 mm Hg or less and 15 mm Hg or less without medications, determined by Kaplan-Meier analysis, was 72.6% at 18 months and 47.9% at 24 months, according to the study.
"Our data support the efficacy and safety of the implantation of this device under a scleral flap. The IOP reduction obtained was significant and long-standing, and complications were mild," the study authors said.
