Some glaucoma patients encounter difficulty with mobility even if their visual fields and visual acuities are relatively good, according to an Australian study.
Geertje Noe and colleagues at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital studied the association between participation in daily activities and visual field damage in patients with glaucoma. Participation in daily activities was assessed using the Impact of Vision Impairment (IVI) questionnaire. VA and contrast sensitivity were also assessed.
Mobility was the domain of the IVI that was most affected in these patients. More than 25% of those studied reported moderate to severe restriction with mobility activities even when there was relatively minor binocular field loss.
The study is published in Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology.
