BRESCIA, Italy — An herbal extract seems to improve pre-existing visual field damage in some patients with normal tension glaucoma, according to a small study.

Luciano Quaranta, MD, and others here with the University Eye Clinic randomized 27 patients with bilateral visual field damage resulting from normal tension glaucoma (NTG). Patients were to receive 40 mg of oral Ginkgo biloba extract three times daily for 4 weeks, followed by a washout period of 8 weeks, then a 4-week regimen of placebo. Another group of patients followed the same regimen, but was assigned the placebo first.

After the Ginkgo biloba treatment, a significant improvement in visual field indices was noted in both groups.

The study is published in Ophthalmology.
